Members of the public are welcome to an Open Night at the SAAO in Cape Town on 28 March 2020, starting at 20h00. Dr. Amidou Sorgho (UCT/OAD) will present a talk titled The dark side of galaxies. This will be followed by a tour of the site and (weather permitting) stargazing.
Summary of the talk
Galaxies are certainly among the most beautiful and complex entities of the Universe. From optical to infrared to radio wavelengths, their images are breathtaking and intriguing. However, what these images do not reveal, although often obtained with the most powerful telescopes, is the important quantity of Dark Matter that galaxies contain. This matter, which cannot be observed directly, is inferred through different techniques and studies.
In this talk, he will give a summary of the observations leading to the proof of the existence of Dark Matter, and an overview of how this matter is distributed in galaxies including our own Milky Way.
the open night will take place at the saao in cape town. the saao is located off liesbeeck parkway, next to the river club.
gates open at 19h30 and parking is available on site.
